Wake-up smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
1 1/4 cup(s) orange juice, preferably calcium-fortified
1 banana
1 1/4 cup(s) frozen berries, such as raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and/or strawberries
1/2 cup(s) low-fat silken tofu, or low-fat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon(s) sugar, or Splenda
D I R E C T I O N S :
Combine orange juice, banana, berries, tofu (or yogurt) and sugar (or Splenda), if using, in a blender; cover and blend until creamy. Serve immediately.
Serves 3; Takes: 5 mins.
Irresistible Peach smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
2 cup(s) (peeled, pitted and diced) peaches, about 3 medium
1/2 cup(s) (low-fat) milk
1 cup(s) vanilla ice cream
1 tablespoon(s) fresh lemon juice
peach slices, for garnish (optional)
D I R E C T I O N S :
Combine diced peaches, milk, ice cream and lemon juice in a blender; purée until nearly smooth. Pour into glasses and serve immediately garnished with peach slices, if you like.
Serves 3; Prep time: 10 mins.
Citrus Berry smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
1 1/4 cup(s) fresh berries
3/4 cup(s) low-fat plain yogurt
1/2 cup(s) orange juice
2 tablespoon(s) nonfat dry milk
1 tablespoon(s) toasted wheat germ
1 tablespoon(s) honey
1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
D I R E C T I O N S :
Place berries, yogurt, orange juice, dry milk, wheat germ, honey and vanilla in a blender and blend until smooth.
Serves 1; Takes: 5 mins.
Banana-Peanut Butter smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
1 small (ripe) banana, cut in half
1/2 cup(s) (low-fat ) milk
1 teaspoon(s) creamy peanut butter
3 ice cubes
D I R E C T I O N S :
In blender, combine banana, milk, peanut butter, and ice cubes; blend until mixture is smooth and frothy. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
Serves 1: Takes: 5 mins.
Mango Lassi smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
1 cup(s) chopped peeled mango
1/3 cup(s) peach sorbet
1/2 cup(s) nonfat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup(s) orange juice
1/8 teaspoon(s) orange-flower water, optional
D I R E C T I O N S:
Place ingredients in the order listed in a blender. Pulse twice to chop mango, stir well, then blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
Serves 2; Takes: 10 mins.
Raspberry-Avocado smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S:
1 avocado, peeled and pitted
3/4 cup(s) orange juice
3/4 cup(s) raspberry juice
1/2 cup(s) frozen raspberries, (not thawed)
D I R E C T I O N S :
Puree avocado, orange juice, raspberry juice and raspberries in a blender until smooth.
Serves 2; Takes 5 mins.
Hawaiian smoothie:
I N G R E D I E N T S :
1 cup(s) chopped fresh pineapple
1/2 cup(s) chopped peeled papaya
1/4 cup(s) guava nectar, (see Ingredient Note)
1 tablespoon(s) lime juice
1 teaspoon(s) grenadine, (see Ingredient Note)
1/2 cup(s) ice
D I R E C T I O N S :
Place ingredients in the order listed in a blender. Pulse three times to chop the fruit, then blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
- Ingredient Notes: Grenadine is a red syrup (originally flavored with pomegranate juice) used to color and flavor drinks. Look for it in the bar-mix section of your supermarket. Guava nectar is available in most markets, with the juices or in the Latin American section.
